Allow admins to set number of votes
To allow for broader suggestions or longer voting times, an admin could grant users more votes. Similarly, to focus on just a few suggestions or to make quick decisions, the admin could reduce the number of votes.

I agree. Depending on the goals of the admin, a different number of votes might be useful. Personally, I think 8 votes is not enough.
But surely a lot of thought went into choosing that number and finding the right balance...? Is there a link to that somewhere so we could see how you came up with it?

The most you can SPREAD YOURSELF OUT currently is by voting for 8 different suggestions. And the most you're able FOCUS your votes is by allocating 3 to ONE suggestion.
So you can have a maximum of only 2 "highest priority" suggestions, but as many as 8 "lowest priority" suggestions...
Personally, I think these parameters should be tweakable, even the max votes/suggestion... 4+3+2+1 = 10 votes.

One of the main reasons we're considering using Salesforce's IdeaExchange over this is because limiting our paying customers feedback is counterproductive. We need to allow our customers to express which things they're looking for, not limit them. Instead of limiting votes, simply only allow 1 vote per idea.

Yes, the limited votes is a bad thing because when you are out of votes, what more can you do? Please change this

@Avi We need to do a better job of explaining this but the whole reason for the limited number of votes is to increase data quality and minimize the effect of a vocal minority. I'd be happy to send you some literature that explains those points (and we'll be putting it online soon).

@cyberbofh The idea is that you come to UserVoice give your top ideas and then we'll email you to bring you back later. We're trying to to reward people for sitting on the site the whole time as that's not what most users will do. We're also going to soon be adding the concept of following an idea so you can be updated on it even if you haven't voted for it (ie it's not one of your top ideas) .

Its not that the core idea is a bad one; I think votes need to be limited to produce the quality you speak of. However, each community has different metrics with regards to how it uses a feedback system. 10 votes may represent quality in one system, but not another, etc. Which is why Uservoice account admins should have control of this aspect.
