Confusing with limit on votes

So what do you do when you hit your limit? It shows a warning but doesn't tell you what you can do about it. That is frustrating. I like the limit, but then I hate it too. What if someone wants to be really active and give a lot of feedback? I want that too.

I understand your concern but our point is not just to gather as many ideas a possible it's to only gather the best ideas a user has. The goal is to create a dialogue with the community so as your ready and items are completed more can be added on. That said we may raise the vote limit site wide (currently 8 votes equates to 3.3 ideas per person) or make it configurable.

Maybe you can let page owners decide how many votes a user gets on their page

I agree taht it would be great to let page owners decide how many votes a user gets on their page.

this should be configurable by product owner

We are looking at clever ways to allow customization. We also increased the default number of votes to 10. Keep in mind - once suggestions are placed into a "planned" mode, votes are redistributed back to their users. If a company is diligent about providing solutions to User submissions, then votes can also stay in play.

Can I just add that I'm totally new to uservoice (joined for Nokia's N-Gage feedback forum), and find the vote limit quite confusing. Are they gone forever? Do I ever get them back?

I've tried to find a help section on uservoice explaining it, but there doesn't seem to be one, at least not one I can find.

I see no evidence that votes are being returned when an item goes to "planned"...

Yeah - first question I asked, is how do I get more votes, and what happens when I run out of votes?

Votes are currently returned when an item goes to "completed" mode. However, there is discussion for moving votes once an item goes to "planned." http://uservoice.uservoice.com/pages/general/suggestions/4687
Also, there is the ability to move your votes around, for instance if you placed 3 votes for an item, you can re-vote that item to 1 and free up two votes.

something is wrong with this scheme. it just feels crufty to have an arbitrary amount of votes assigned. Idea votes should be different than bumping someone elses ideas.

I think users should be clear from the beginning that they only have a limited amount of votes, so they understand the value. I didn't realize this when I first started using it...now I only have 2 votes left.

the limited text is kind of annoying too!

    @goodlux,
see you only have 2 left, but if you want to change how you voted (if knowing in advnce would have changed your votes), you could always, you know, take them back and have the full 10 at any time! (clik on your number of votes in a given idea, and you can reduce/increase/zeor out)

hrm well, I guess that helps, but its also counter-intuitive...that's just not how most people think of a "vote"....something you do once and you don't get to take it back. The ability to to reassign votes isn't made clear though the interface.

You should call them chips for tokens or chads(!) or something. Maybe just an explanation of the "rules" would help.

@goodlux What we're dealing with is scarcity mindset. If you had only $10 and someone told you this is all you have for the next week, would you spend it differently than if the same were true for $100? The biggest leap is to realize that giving users unlimited votes does not equal better voting. It's just more voting. We think companies are looking for quality ideas, not quantity. Make sense?

I totally agree with Marcus on this. If you give users unlimited votes, then they'll vote for most everything. Development resources are limited and we have to prioritize, so the users should too!

I'll add on that 91% of users vote for or add only 1 idea and that the other 9% will spend every vote you give them.
